What Does It Take To Get To The Next Level?

I was honored to participate in last month’s Women in Technology International (WITI) Summit for the 5th year in a row. The topics I coached on this year were moving past overwhelm, procrastination and self-doubt and getting to the next level while feeling happy and fulfilled. I was curious what other leaders had to say on the topic of getting to the next level. Here are some interesting insights I took away from some of the panels I attended this year.

What senior leaders said they look for when promoting someone:

- Infinite curiosity, continuous learning

- Resiliency

- Problem solving

- Ability to deal with ambiguity

- Practical positivity

- Integrity, someone you can trust

- Having the next level of view, multidimensional thinking

Their suggestions on how to best position yourself for a promotion:

- Create a confident mindset

- Work on your brand

- Surround yourself with mentors

- Articulate your ideas and who you are

- Get a coach 😊

- Contribute to the bigger good

Working on your brand and articulating your ideas and who you are is something many professionals I meet struggle with. So many of us put our head down and work hard, hoping that our great work will be noticed and rewarded. Unfortunately, just doing great work is often not enough.

Others want to know who you are and what you stand for. They want to hear your point of view. It's a process to figure this out, starting with understanding who you really are and what's important to you. I know that it's very hard to figure this out by yourself, so I worked on this with my coach and it was definitely worth the effort.

Are you positioning yourself well to get to the next level?
